Etsu Jabi Hosts NICE National Chairman, Engr. Mrs. Aishatu Aliyu Umar in his Palace - Express Concern over Incessant Building Collapses within his Community – 15th July, 2020. The Etsu Jabi, Abuja, His Royal Highness (HRH) Alh. Yakubu Auta sought audience with the National Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE) through a letter dated23rd June, 2020 while congratulating her as the first Northerner and female National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers. Following this request, the National Chairman visited HRH on Wednesday, 15th July, 2020 at 09:56AM in company of the Executive Secretary, Engr. Dominic O. Akuboh and NICE IT Officer, Nasiru Lawal. The delegation were received by the Cabinet Chiefs and members and officials. After exchange of pleasantries, the secretary to HRH gave a brief history of the Community being one of the original Gbagyi inhabitants of Abuja and the roles HRH had played in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and political crisis settlement since 1980 when he inherited the throne from his father. HRH had graciously played these roles right from the time of President Shagari, Abacha, Gen. Abdulsalami and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. The virtues of HRH were listed to include zero tolerance for corruption, uncommon wisdom and experience. The spokesman reiterated the persistent incidences of building collapses while citing examples within the Jabi community and stated that they have lost their children to this preventable occurrence. In a bit to draw attention of stakeholders, the community had met with the Executive Secretary, FCDA, Engr. Umar Gambo Jibrin as well as the Director, Department of development control, Engr. Muktar Usman Galadima amongst others. The community urged the National Chairman to use her good office and person to ensure that relevant authorities take measures to avert the collapses and the attendant losses of lives and properties. They further stated that they have being watching and paying attention to the leadership style of the National Chairman since the inception of her administration and appreciates her straight forwardness in managing the affairs of the institution. The respect of the National Chairman to royalty of which she is also one was highly commended by the Community. In her response, Engr. Mrs. Aishatu Aliyu Umar introduced herself and entourage and stated how humbled she was by the courtesy shown her by the community and felt like a daughter of the community. She gave a background information of her involvement in the Institution and milestones achieved in some quarters. She pledged to do all within her professional, official and personal capacity towards taking actionable steps to preventing building collapses in the Jabi community and elsewhere. She noted that the institution was collaborating with the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria in this regard. HRH, Alh. Yakubu Auta, in his address admonished the National Chairman, stated that she is indeed a daughter of his and the community and pronounced her, Magajiya’n Jabi, a revered traditional title. He also berates the spate of youth unemployment within his community, the Country at large and lack of merit-based selection processes in public recruitment. Vote of thanks was delivered and the National Chairman presented souvenirs to HRH and group photographs and prayers taken at 10:36am.
